Resources

Here are some editing resources you can access. Some are specific to British Columbia and Canada, while others are relevant to any writer.

Editors Association of Canada

https://editors.ca

The go-to resource for all things editing in Canada, with details on the editorial process, publishing, writing up a contract, and much more.

UBC Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication

    https://writing.library.ubc.ca/writing-resources/guides-to-writing-and-research/

This UBC service provides UBC community members (students and faculty) with an array of academic writing support, but the website also has great advice available for all to access on a range of academic writing topics.

      New Canadian Media website

      https://newcanadianmedia.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/The-Canadian-Press-Stylebook_-Cheat-sheet-for-NCM-writers-1.pdf

This website offers a clear cheatsheet of the most common Canadian Press style guide rules, with examples for each rule. Very handy if you don’t have your CP style memorized and don’t own a copy of the style book.

        Capitalize My Title

        http://www.capitalizemytitle.com

Title capitalization variations between style guides can be pedantic. This website allows you to copy and paste your title and confirm that you are following the guidelines.

          Punctuation guide

          https://www.thepunctuationguide.com

Do you remember when to use an en-dash versus an em-dash? How about a semi-colon or a colon? This punctuation guide addresses all the punctuation minutiae, and offers clear answers with examples. Great for ESL writers.

            Plain language writing

            https://digital.gov/guides/plain-language

Active voice instead of passive voice. The simple word instead of the obscure one. Present tense instead of past tense. This website offers clear directives on how to emphasize clear writing in your text.
